Low Phat Cooking

It had been a while since I updated my other blog, as I haven't had a chance to experiment with new receipes over the past few months. I decided to include some low phat staples from my own kitchen, and I hope you enjoy!

Sushi-licious

Last night we went to China Sky in Winchester for dinner with Ali, Rhonda and Jenn. I had spicy tuna, an Alaskan roll (raw salmon + avocado), and a shrimp tempura roll. The sushi was phenomenal. I haven't had sushi since the last time I was at China Sky in October, and I had missed it! What a wonderful way to get healthy protein in a delicious/nutritious package. My dinner came with 18 pieces, but I could only eat 7. Actually, I could have eaten more, but I felt filled after 7, so that was just right. I hate to waste, so luckily Alison was there to take the left overs. She is the only person I know who eats sushi leftovers, but according to her text this morning, it was just as good as last night, and the best sushi she's ever had. Right on.

Things are heating up at the Redneck Yacht Club (our house in NH). Yesterday as we were gazing out over the snow covered waterfront, we were surprised to see a Jeep Cherokee screeching in front of our house on the ice doing donuts. Ah yes, we are officially back to reality.

I finally lost the last pesky lb I was up, so now I am down 78 lbs...again. I had a bit of an asthma attack yesterday at the gym, as my cold/allergies are clearly opposed to cardiovascular activity. I am planning to go back today (this time with inhaler in tow), but this cold weather and snow storm may prevent me from going...I don't want to get more sick than I am already getting...

As it was, I had to make an exit after spending just under an hour and a half at Mr. T's bday party last night. I was in bed by 10:30, and I slept until 9 this morning! That is not like me, and I don't want sickness to prevent me from working out again!

Stay warm.

Water weight

I'm down another 2 lbs (of the 8 I was up), so now I'm only one lb away from my lowest weight. I have been back from vacation, and lost 7 lbs in two days. Obviously, it must have all been water weight. That is crazy! Yesterday I ate 1480 calories, which is within my range, but more than I usually eat, and definitely more than I ate during vacation, except for one day. The only difference I can see is that now I am getting my water in.

While on vacation, it was so hard to get water in. With the lap band, I'm not supposed to drink 30 minutes prior to a meal, during a meal, or for 60 minutes after the meal. Every time I was around water at restaurants, I couldn't have any of it. I think that my plan to always rent places with a full kitchen going forward will help with the water too, and I will plan to buy a case of water when I arrive on vacation. Even at home, having a case handy makes it exponentially easier for me to drink my 64-100 oz/day.

It is amazing to see the difference water makes, so drink your water, folks!! I can't tell you the difference drinking more water (in place of so much diet coke) has made to my skin as well. I probably look five years younger from that one change. I look much closer to my age now, and not in my late 30's as I used to.
Drink up!

Workin' it

I was down 5 lbs from yesterday, which puts me still 3 above my lowest, but that's much better than EIGHT! I drank a ton of water yesterday, which was much needed, and I ate 903 calories and 23 grams of fiber. That's a lot of fiber for so few calories. LOL

I would love to get rid of the remaining 3 today, but I realize that's trickier than the first five, so we shall see.

Back to reality

It's great to be back in New England!

As if...

We were fortunate to fly back on a sunny day. It was 38 degrees out, and considerably warmer than it had been while we were away, so it wasn't a total shock to the system when we arrived in Boston yesterday.

The second I got back to MA, my sneezing and coughing and runny nose returned. It must be allergies, because it was instantaneous, so I am clearly allergic to cold winters, and I must find a solution.

I feel as bloated as ever, and I am up 2 lbs from before I left. The pre-vacation bloat never went away, so I am now technically up EIGHT lbs from my lowest weight a few days before I left. In the past, this kind of thing would have flung me right off the wagon, but not this time. There is no wagon; this is life. I'm not on a diet, although I am trying to lose weight.

This weight will be off me soon, and more and more will follow. I had a wonderful vacation, and with the exception of two meals that I chose to have, I ate perfectly healthy while I was away. I can't control how restaurants prepare their veggies or other foods, and I'm sure I had more oils and fats in even my healthy choices than I would have if I were cooking them myself. There is only so much you can do about these things, but I will say that eating out every meal is not the best strategy for even the most health conscious eaters. I usually rent places with kitchens to save money on eating out, and I didn't this time for a number of non-food related reasons. Next time I go away, however, finding a place with a full kitchen will be a top priority for me.

You live and learn, and I had a wonderful time while I was away, and I don't regret one minute of it, even though I now have more weight to lose than I did before I left. The memories of paradise will help me coast through this awful winter until the summer comes again and I'm in my own paradise! :)

Wins and losses

The Pats won! That's the good news.

The not so good news is that my sneaking suspicions were correct about the crazy scale here. For some reason, today I think it was correct. It has me at just about (or a little higher) than what I weighed at the beginning of my vacation (water weight included). Even though I have been making healthy choices wherever I can, I still am not eating quite as healthy as I would be if I were cooking, so it makes sense if I'm a little up. Also, I haven't been getting as much water in (by any means), so I'm bloated on top of it.

Back to the good news: seeing those numbers on the scale (even though I doubted them) gave me a glance into the near future for me, and I am very motivated to hit those numbers when I return! Watch out, gym, here I come!

I really think the scale is broken

I just called Darcy to come down from the room to weigh herself again. If her weight is right for the second time, then I guess I will have to trust it, but it's just hard to believe. *If* this scale is accurate, I am down about 86 lbs. (Actually, it's closer to 90 since I'm fully clothed, layers and all, and have already eaten breakfast and drank 3 waters.)

Can that be? I guess it's possible, but if that's the case, it would have meant that while on vacation, I not only lost the 6 lbs of water weight that I had before leaving, but an additional 8 - 12 lbs in 4 days? That doesn't make sense, because I've been losing 2-3 lbs/week for a long time. Why would I have a spike like that?

As you can see, I'm skeptical, but if I find out this scale is right (and I'm so crazy I may go find another scale in town to use), I will have to attribute it to my activity level. I haven't been to the gym in forever because I was sick for so long, so I may have been losing slower because of my sedentary winter lifestyle. I have been very active since I've been down here, and if I really lost that much more weight as a result, you won't be able to keep me out of the gym when I get home!

Darcy just weighed herself and she was up 5 lbs from yesterday, so she thinks the scale is wrong, but in the opposite direction that I was concerned with. LOL Yesterday, she weighed herself before breakfast though, and she had on much lighter clothing, so it appears as though it could be correct.

Craziness. It's a cold day in Key West, so we are heading to the movies. That will be fun - I haven't done that in a while. Then we plan to go watch the game somewhere.

Go Pats!!!

Things that make you go hmmmm....

I found a scale in the fitness center where we are staying in Key West. I have no idea if it's accurate or not, but I had Darcy weigh herself for verification, and she thinks it is. It is a doctor's scale, so it should be, but I was just surprised by the results. If it's correct, and that is still an if, I'm down about 82 - 83 lbs. I was up 6 from water weight right before I left, but that means that the 6 came off, as well as an additional 4-5. Let's hope it's right!

Blogging my way to success

I'm submitting an article to Newsweek about this blog, and how it has been central to my success. I have three friends who have also started blogs to document their journeys through weigh loss or quitting smoking, and I think it's a fabulous accountability vehicle. TJ emailed me that he couldn't believe I blogged on vacation, but I can't help it. It keeps me grounded, and I appreciate all of you for your constant support and affirmation.

Yesterday I ate 1066 calories. I'm so happy to be tracking this while on vacation. I don't feel like I'm missing out, and I just make healthy choices. It's weird. ;-)

XO to all of you.

Updates from the beach

Boy, is it WONDERFUL to be on vacation! We are having an absolute blast! I have been watching what I eat, and yesterday I ate 1164 calories. I am still tracking everything I eat on fitday.com because we can't have the girl losing her figure in one fun week! ;-)

Yesterday the ocean was ferocious, and I was swimming against the wind for exercise. What a fun way to work out.

We need to move here.

Holy Bloat

I didn't weigh myself the past two days, and I did this morning, and I was up six lbs! How annoying. I am averaging between 900 - 1000 calories per day, which is below the range of 1200 - 1400 that has been recommended, so I shouldn't be gaining weight.

Menu yesterday

Breakfast (I splurge on this meal once/week): two eggs, one piece of rye toast, one sausage link, a few small bites of hashbrowns
Total Calories (including butter on bread): 457

Lunch: 1/2 a turkey wrap on low carb wheat wrap with mustard, about 6 french fries
Total Calories: 209

Dinner: about 30 baby carrots and fage (yogurt) mixed with ranch dip (it's actually really good, and much more nutritious than sour cream)
Total Calories: 263

Total Calories for day: 929

I read that fiber can make you bloated and cause you to retain water. I probably drank at least 100 oz of water yesterday, so that should be plenty. I ate my dinner late (at 8) because I wasn't hungry, but I figured it would be okay since it was carrots and yogurt.

I can't figure it out, but I'm hoping it is a fluke and it will be gone by tomorrow, like the last time this happened to me.

Stay tuned.

KC

PS - I know part of the problem is that it's not healthy to weight yourself every day, and once a week should be plenty, but I feel like it helps me stay accountable. I can't bury my head in the sand for days at a time.

Vacation!

We leave for Florida in less than three days! I can't wait to exit this winter blunderland. We are anticipating 12 inches tomorrow. Awesome.

I haven't really thought much about food for the trip. Right now, I eat what I want, but I generally want healthy foods. When I decide I want to have something unhealthy like french fries at a restaurant, I only have a few and that's plenty. I used to associate quantity with food. I wanted food that tasted good, and I wanted a LOT of it. In Weight Watchers, they told us we could eat anything we wanted, but we had to watch our portion size, and keep the program guidelines in mind to ensure a balanced diet.

I was never able to keep a generally healthy diet, with a few exceptions - you know, the way the thin people have always eaten??! That's the one. I was all or nothing, which is a theme in many areas of my life. I would be fanatical about sticking to my diet, but if I had a moment of weakness and ate something bad, I would fall off the wagon and throw in the towel. I couldn't mentally bridge that gap, and realize that my diet doesn't have to be perfect, just generally healthy.

I think the only reason I have been able to change my thinking in this area is because my appetite is small enough to control portion size now. Even if I have something bad, it's never really enough to do any damage, and because I'm not starving all the time anymore, it's so much easier for me to make the right choices.

The hunger I experienced, prior to having this surgery, was ferocious. It made me feel desperate, and I could not bring myself to care about dieting or eating healthy when I felt that way. I always thought this was psychological, and it may have been, but my MD says there may have been a medical reason for that as well. Good to know...now. ;)

If I were on a diet right now, and my weight loss journey is very similar to dieting, I would be panicked about my upcoming vacation. I would think that my trip would be ruined if I had to eat healthy the whole time, and if I gave myself permission to eat freely on the vacation, I would not return to my diet when my trip ended.

I'm so glad to be free of that thinking. I could care less about what I'm going to eat on vacation now. I'm sure I'll have some high calorie meals, but in general, I know I'll make healthy choices because I truly want to. Food does not have the power over me that it used to, and that is a pretty dramatic change in my life.

Signing off...

New Tricks

My friend Kitty started a blog recently to capture her weight loss journey, and I enjoy reading it very much. Feeding off the inspiration of others is very powerful.

Kitty's blog: http://www.ificandoit-socanyou.blogspot.com/

In her entry yesterday, she started talking about some new things she can do as a result of her weight loss, and I thought I would pause to reflect on changes I have seen after losing nearly 80 lbs. It comes off only 1 lb at a time, but the differences really add up!

My New Tricks:

(Please excuse me as some of these may have been mentioned in my previous blogs)

  • Tying my shoes is actually quite easy
  • So is putting on socks
  • I now sit five inches away from my steering wheel, rather than on top of it
  • I can stand against a wall without my back shelf separating the rest of me from it (I know you are jealous!)
  • I can stand indefinitely
  • I don't have to plan my meeting schedule around the least possible routes to walk anymore
  • I can walk for miles
  • The recommended portions on products I buy are truly enough food for me (and sometimes too much!)
  • I do not have an unhealthy interest in what each next meal will be
  • I can sit in chairs that have sides without feeling as though I'm going to pop out of them
  • My face and neck are no longer one
  • I am now only two pant sizes larger than my Father (I'm sure that makes him real proud - haha!)

That's all I can think of for now, although I am sure there are more.

I'm not wild about Fiber

I know, seriously, how many more days do you need to read about my fiber intake. I get it. It's super boring! Getting 20 grams of fiber in each day is not getting any easier. I've been between 17-20 all week, which is a tremendous improvement. Sometimes it makes me feel bloated. They say to drink more water to compensate, but I already drink a ton. What do THEY know. ;-)

I'm down another lb. I swear I'm losing weight slower than usual. That may be in my head. It's too bad that I didn't write a blog during the past 79 diets I was on. I probably could have learned something! ;-)

I'm not complaining that it's coming off kind of slow - that's what I signed up for and that's what's healthy. 78 lbs in just over 4 months is a great start.

Go me.

Phun with Phiber

It certainly wasn't easy getting to 20 grams of fiber yesterday! I had to really do a lot of planning to get there. I have planned out my food for the day, but not through dinner quite yet. I'm going to have to get 9 grams of fiber into our dinner because I'm only up to 11 through my afternoon snack of grapes. I wish you all would try inputting the foods you eat into fitday.com for just a week because it is *so* eye opening!

I will keep you posted!

KC

Monday, January 7, 2008

Oh dear

Upon my suspicion that I needed more fiber in my diet, I just ran my diet for the last month (on fit.day.com) and learned that I averaged 7 grams of fiber per day. That's not good. According to the ADA, you should consume one gram of fiber per 100 calories per day. I was averaging 1200 calories per day for the past month, so my average fiber should have been 12. I was under by nearly half. Additionally, the ADA recommends that if you are on a reduced calorie diet, as I am, you should try to still have a minimum of 20 grams of fiber per day. Okay - new goal - 50-60 grams of protein AND 20 grams of fiber per day.

I will let you know how this pans out. ;-)

Bouncing back

Yesterday I had much more of an appetite, and I was up to 800 calories. I had lots of very small meals, and that helped me to reach the 800. I know that I should be up to 1200-1400 calories per day soon, but I don't want to rush it and stretch out my band. Today I'm down a total of 77 lbs. I'm just about ready to return to the gym, although I don't want to push it with vacation coming up. I think I'll work out from home with my exercise ball, yoga tapes and ab roller.

Today I can finally eat foods again! Mushies weren't so bad... I'm really looking forward to having that pork chop and green been dinner I have been fantasizing about since last Wednesday. I wonder if I'm taking in too much protein. With this surgery, protein is so highly stressed, I have been really good about eating protein first, then veggies, then carbs. I just ran a report on my diet for the last month, and I averaged 75 grams of protein each day. We are supposed to be between 50-60.

I was going to focus on reducing my sodium intake, because that's always been a challenge for me, but I ran the report of my sodium intake for the last month, and I was only at about 70% of the daily recommended dose, so now my focus is going to be fiber. I'm not very excited about this, but I think it's a good idea.

Have a wonderful week!

Mushy Madness

Yesterday I started mushies. I started one meal earlier than I was supposed to, but I'm not concerned. After my first fill, I didn't even stay on liquids as long as I did this fill, so I'm getting better. I only ate 287 calories yesterday, though. Oops. Apparently the fill worked. I had one egg and a half of a soft piece of toast around noon, and then a half of a lean cuisine for dinner. I know lean cuisine isn't technically considered a mushy, but the chicken carbonara is very very soft, so I think it's fine. I'm not going to eat only eggs and potatoes for two days. I'm going to be more conscious about getting in more calories today. I don't want to go into starvation mode!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I lost another lb, so now the total is 76. 76 is close to 80 which *really* sounds like a lot! :) Once I hit 80, I think I'm going to envision every lb bringing me closer to 100. What a milestone. 100 lbs = teeth whitening. I can't wait.

Be well.

Happy 4 month anniversary to me

I started this journey on September 4th, which was the beginning of my liquid diet. As of today, I'm down 75 lbs. 75 lbs in four months is a great start! I am now at the same point I was at 4 months ago - on my liquid diet. I was reading some of my older posts last night, and I came across one during my original liquid diet when I said that I thought I may be over food. As it turns out, that is not correct. ;-)

I was driving home from work last night fantasizing about food, and what I would have for dinner if I wasn't on a liquid diet. The difference is, I was fantasizing about a pork chop and green beans, and before, I would have been fantasizing about a PuPu Platter or Pizza Hut or anything that was ridiculously fattening and greasy. My desire for those foods is nearly gone now. I go out for Chinese food from time to time, but I always get some chicken dish with vegetables or sushi if they have Japanese cuisine as well. I will admit there have been a few times that I still wanted Pizza Hut, but if I want it that bad, I would have it -- it would probably make me sick because I'm not used to greasy foods at all anymore.

I used to actually like food that was prepared with a lot of grease, and now if I get something from a restaurant that's greasy, I find it to be disgusting. I know that's how most people feel, but I never understood that. I don't know why having a lap band would make me change my perception of foods, but perhaps it's because I'm just used to healthy eating now and it's become the norm for me. That is a good thing, Martha.

I'm not going to buy myself my 75 lb prize, which was a night in Boston - dinner, theater, top notch hotel, etc... I'm going on a lavish vacation in two weeks, and I just don't want to waste all that money right now. As I type this, however, I realize that I can still buy myself a 75lb prize, it just doesn't have to cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I am going to buy myself a new outfit or shoes or something. There.

Dear reader, today also marks the 4 month anniversary of my blog, so happy anniversary to you too!

Eat well.

KC

PS. 3 days of liquids equals 9 shakes. I'm 5 down, with 4 to go. Go team.

Thursday, January 3, 2008

I always heard liquid lunches are supposed to be fun? ;-)

Let me tell you, my lunch of Carnation Instant Breakfast was a hoot! Especially following my breakfast of same, and dinner last night of same. Three days of liquids. Broth, water, instant breakfast...that's really about it. I have one day down, two to go. I can't believe I have to do this every time I have a fill, and then follow it up by two days of mushies! That's okay. I'm not really bothered. I'm down 74 lbs because of this little gem, so I'll do what it takes, and I'll like it! :)

Last night, I couldn't stop thinking about food, and I know it was only because I wasn't allowed to eat anything. It's silliness. I'm just hoping I can lose this last lb to get to 75 at long last! I would love to drop another five before my trip in two weeks as well, but we shall see!

Shake shake shake
Shake shake shake
Shake your breakfast, shake your lunch
Shake shake shake
Shake shake shake
Shake your dinner, shake your sna-ack

The impatient patient

I finally had my second fill tonight. My surgeon is soo fantastic that he just has too many patients to manage. There is always such a long wait to get into see him. For those of you who know me, I am not one to wait. I am the person who abandons a full grocery cart if I'm waiting in line too long. I do not wait...for anything...it gets to the cut off my nose to spite my face point, in fact...but we all have our opportunities for improvement. ;-)

Half of the reason it took me five years to get the lap band was because getting an appointment to see a surgeon took so long to schedule, and there were so many appointments involved before you could actually get it done. It was just too much for me to sign up for at the time. I choose my PCP based upon how quickly they can see me from when I first call the office. It's not about reputation or experience, it's about convenience. I realize that as a professional working within healthcare, my outlook on these matters is a bit off, but this is me, and this is where I am.

It is not uncommon to wait two hours to get in to see my lap band MD. I have waited over three hours to see him on more than one occasion. When I finally committed to this journey, I knew I would need to set aside my impatience and just accept that if I want this, I will not only need to sacrifice my gluttony and my insistence upon instant gratification, I will also need to be patient. I was so good about this for all of my pre-op appointments, and for the first two post-op appointments as well, but I am nearing the end of my tolerance for waiting at this point.

For some reason, there was no traffic as I left Boston this afternoon to get to my 5PM appointment, and I was 30 minutes early. I did not see my MD until after 6:30, and I was with him for about 2 minutes. There were at least four times during my wait that I considered leaving...this is how it starts with me. First, I fantasize about leaving, and then, I always follow through...this time I was able to overcome my flights of fancy, but I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out.

I don't have to go to him to get my fill - I can go to any MD office that offers lap band surgery - I could even go to an MD that's 2 minutes away from my house, rather than nearly an hour away. I feel guilty for having these thoughts. I love my surgeon, and I would recommend him a thousand times over. I have now met hundreds of his patients, and they all sing his praises as much as I do. There is a reason people wait hours on end to see him. I know he will look out for my best interests better than any other MD, and for now, that trumps the terrible waiting time.

I read almost an entire book in the waiting room today - normally I bring a lap top as they have free wifi. These things are fine solutions, and I need to keep reminding myself that it is worth the wait.

Yours, fatigued...KC

Alison's Predictions, a Year End Re-cap, and other musings...

For some reason, my dear friend Alison has always been eerily accurate with my weight related matters. I am a large person, if you have not yet surmised, yet Alison can tell the difference between a 3 lb loss and a 5 lb loss with me. For a while, I didn't have a scale, and I would just ask Alison to let me know weekly how much I had lost, and she was always right! By the time I got to a scale, I would confirm that she was correct. Perhaps Alison should leave her career as a recruiter and join the circus to guess people's age and weight. There may just be a future for her in that...

If you are a Phatband Phollower, and of course you are, you will recall that Alison (and Stephanie) won the original prediction contest (prizes pending) regarding the amount of weight I would lose in my pre-op liquid diet month. Alison also suggested at that time, that by the end of the year, I would be down 75-80 lbs. With one day left in the year, I'm now down 2 more lbs to a total of 74 lbs. I may or may not lose that additional 1-6 lbs between today and tomorrow, but either way, that is pretty close!

One of the presents I got for D this year was a trip to Key West (and Ft. Lauderdale and South Beach). We celebrated my 30th birthday there in September '06, and we had a blast. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference that 75-80 lbs makes for walking around, etc, on vacation. I signed us up for a snorkeling adventure that I never would have attempted with 75 more lbs of me, so this is exciting! I made sure every place we stayed had lots of fun active things to do, which was not a priority for me during our last trip. ;-)

I know I have so much more to lose, but this first 74 lbs has made me feel human again. I don't have to plan my life around my weight, and that change is profound. I used to be afraid of going to unknown restaurants because what if the booths were too restrictive, I didn't want to make plans to go shopping (still don't because I h8 shopping) or to museums because my back hurt from walking or standing for more than a minute (no exaggeration). At work, at some facilities I have to walk long distances between meetings, and I had to make sure I gave myself enough time between meetings to find a place to rest my back without walking the entire distance straight through. I had a back injury from a car accident that never healed properly, and the extra weight just made it impossible to do the most basic things in life.

My restrictions and my weight gain fueled each other, and the more my back hurt, the less I could move, and the more I gained, and the even less I could move, and so on. The cycle was never ending until now. The cycle has ended. A little while ago, I got separated from my friends at church and I didn't have my cell phone on me, so I walked home 3-4 miles, uphill at least 75% of the way. I *never* would have been able to do that before.

This is the last day of the phattest year of my life. Tomorrow, I have no resolutions (other than to be better about carrying my cell phone), as the changes I want to make in my life are already underway. I'm hoping/planning this next year, and the years to follow will be the healthiest years of my life.

Enjoy the end of 2007, and I'll chat with you all in 2008!

Beef Welling-Yum!

Christmas dinner was delicious, I must say. It bothered me a little bit because it was richer than what I'm used to now, but it sure was good! I definitely need a fill, as I had no problem eating an 8oz fillet, asparagus and potatoes. Whatever damage I may have done on Christmas or Christmas Eve, however, is all forgotten, as my bronchitis has turned into pneumonia, and I have a bit of a stomach bug on top. I weighed myself this morning (as any dieter would do after a flu), and I was still down 72. I bet that wouldn't have been the case yesterday morning. ;-)

Be well!

Not much going on...

Hello,

I know it's been a few days since I wrote so I thought I would check in, but not much is new over here! The holiday season isn't very difficult for me because I do not give into temptations for sweets, but I think just having a break from my routine is the challenging part... Too many days off in a row feel like weekend days, which starts to feel like a vacation, which makes me think I don't have to be as good as I usually am. I had popcorn last night (not reduced fat) and a half of a salami sub. I wouldn't normally eat those things. I also had a half of a piece of lemon bread, but in my defense, I made 12 loaves, and I wasn't going to give them out without trying it first!

Today is another day of baking - I'm making a cheesecake, mint brownies (Dorandi family tradition), and mincemeat fold overs (Carroll family tradition). Tomorrow night, we are having an Italian Christmas Eve at our house. Ravioli's, meatballs, braciole, an anchovy pasta dish that Dennis is making, and roast beef. They don't even usually serve potatoes with the roast beef - they have it with the pasta and red sauce. Whaaaaaaaat? This little Irish girl is definitely making potatoes and gravy as a side. Meat is pointless without a potato product! ;-)

I bought this Stonewall Kitchen Wasabe & Horseradish spread that I want to use as a base for a roasted garlic crust for the roast. The little Italian girl is horrified at this concept, however, because how is that going to go with ravioli's? (The little Irish girl is wondering how any roast beef goes with ravioli's to begin with...) So apparently, I'm making a roast, half crusted and half plain.

Christmas day shouldn't be as much of a challenge. I'm making Beef Wellington, but I couldn't bring myself to use pate because of the whole cruelty to animals thing, so I'm using pesto instead, and I think it's going to be fabulous! I was going to make twice baked potatoes as well, but we are visiting my grandmother for brunch on Christmas morning, and I'm doing the cooking for that as well, so I don't want to have to rush around so much that I don't enjoy the day. Instead, I will just make the filling to twice baked potatoes with cheese and sour cream, and I may bake the mashed potatoes in the oven briefly to give it that crisp texture on top. Other than that, we're having asparagus with Bearnaise sauce, corn, bread...and that's really it. I don't think the menu will be very challenging, but I do think it will be delicious!

I haven't gained any weight since I last wrote, and I haven't lost any either. My appetite is definitely bigger than it was before, and I'm looking forward to my fill on 1/2. If I can make it to then without gaining any weight, I'll be happy. If I lose more on top of it, even better.

Happy Holidays!

No fill for you

I have been sick this week, so I had to reschedule my fill for 1/2. They like you to be healthy when you have a fill because for several days after, all you can have are liquids and mushies, and it's not always the best time to fight off an illness. It's a bummer, but I'll make it. I haven't lost anything since last Friday, and I may not lose anything else until I get a fill, but we will soon find out.

I'm not as hungry this week as I was last week, and I've been staying between 1000 - 1300 calories per day. I'm not burning as many calories as I normally do either because I've just been sitting in front of the TV each night. This sickness is cramping my style, but I see my MD today, so hopefully that will get me on the road to recovery.

I was looking forward to being freshly filled before the holidays, but I'll be fine without it. I'm lucky that sweets aren't a big thing for me, because this is the season for sweets!

Have a great day!

Finally!

The scale moved, and I lost 2 more lbs. Now I'm at 72, and that much closer to 75! I would love to get to 75 by Christmas - what a nice gift to self! I don't want to jinx it though... :) For the past two months, I have averaged a 2.8 lb loss per week, which is still above the 1-2 recommended, but it's certainly still within a healthy range.

I have a fill on Monday, just in time for the holidays, and I see my nutritionist on Wednesday. I can't believe how fast time is flying! I'm relieved knowing I'm going into this holiday week with a fill, and even though I'll be on solids by the weekend, I'll only be able to eat very small portions. I should get a fill before every holiday! :)

Have a great weekend!

More Tales from the Scale

I haven't lost anything since I got down to 70 over a week ago! I know it's because I've finally been able to eat the amounts I was supposed to be eating all along, but this is the longest I have gone without a loss. 8 days...

Thankfully, I have my next fill on Monday, and I think that will be a great help, but I would really like to lose something between now and then.

I meet with my nutritionist on Tuesday, so then we can talk about a new amount of calories that I should be taking in each day. I'm going to guess 1200-1400, but we will see!

In the mean time, I am still logging everything I eat on fitday.com.

Last night, I ordered a grilled chicken salad for dinner, and I was able to eat the whole thing! I never would have been able to eat even half of it recently. I think six weeks between fills is too long. Other MDs give fills every 2 weeks. I know my MD is more concerned about keeping me healthy than a rapid weight loss, but right now, it just seems like too much time has passed.

I can't believe there are only 9 shopping days until Christmas!!

Have a great day!

Phatso

I am 5 weeks out from my first fill, and I'm getting hungrier by the minute. The MD warned me that weeks five and six are always tough, and by the time I get my next fill, I would be *very* ready for it. He was right! I have had no problem hitting the calorie intake I never could before. The last five days, I have eaten between 1500-1700 (supposed to be 1600) each day.

I know that is what I am supposed to be eating for now, technically, but because I was used to eating more like 800-1200 (and often 600), I'm not losing now. My body just needs to get adjusted to this new calorie intake, and by the time it does, I will be having my next fill and back on liquids! :)

D and I were really hungry this morning, and we stopped at Burger King on our way to work. I very rarely eat fast food because it's a waste of calories, and not to mention unhealthy, but I did, and my breakfast was 838 calories! I will have to really watch what I have for lunch and dinner!

***
As you may have seen on the news, last week a tractor trailer exploded in Everette, destroying several cars and 3 apartment buildings. One of the families affected by this tragedy works at one of the hospitals in the system I work for. Since D and I have two homes, we decided to donate the use of the one closest to Boston to this family. I don't share this to pat ourselves on the back - I share this because I had a really interesting experience preparing the house for their arrival.

My boss allowed me to take Friday as a "free" day off to prepare my home, as I only learned Thursday night that they would be moving in on Sunday! We had not stayed in that house in several weeks. Not only did the entire house need to be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom, D and I needed to sort through all of our things to decide what to leave, what to move to NH, what to donate and what to dispose of.

When we moved to NH, we each brought a carry-on bag of clothing, and that was IT! Everything we own was in this house, so we basically had two days to prepare to move, and also to clean the entire house, and Darcy had to work on Friday, so one of the two days was just me.

I have never been a lazy person, but when you are so completely out of shape, you just can't do that much. Backs hurt, knees ache, etc... Before I started losing weight, if I had a lot of housework to do, I would do it in shifts. I could never do as much as I wanted to. On Friday and Saturday, I was on my feet non stop: lifting things, getting on my hands and knees to clean, running up and down stairs over and over - each day was 10-12 hours of physical labor, and I accomplished a TON! I didn't even know I would physically be able to do all that I did until I actually did it!

70 lbs is a lot of weight to lose, but I still have so much more to lose...I had such ease in getting everything done...I can't imagine how it will get any better when I lose more, but I'm anxious to see! If the next 70 I lose has as dramatic of an impact on me as the first 70, I pity the people around me. I think I will be out of control.

We have such a feeling of accomplishment, and when this family moves on, the house will be ready to sell, and we'll only need to pack up dishes, etc, and decorations. That's the easy part...Let's just hope the market picks up between now and then!

Have a great day!

Seventy!

For some reason, my scale worked this morning, and I found out that I lost 70 lbs! Right on!

Yesterday, I ate more than I normally would because I was a bit snowed in and it seemed like the thing to do, so it only figures that I had a 2 lb loss today. It's funny how that happens, but I'm not complaining! :)

I'm hoping to hit 75 within the next two weeks, which is my second milestone.

Today is my 2 month anniversary of the surgery (ish) and 3 month anniversary of the liquid diet: 70 lbs in 3 months is more than I could have hoped for. I'm thrilled with the decision I made to take control of my life and weight loss, and I am excited for the months and years to come.

Have a great day all!

Tales from the Scale

Unfortunately, my scale needs a new battery, and it's a lithium watch type battery, which I don't have hanging around the house, and I haven't been able to weigh myself for two days now.

The last time I weighed myself was Saturday morning, and I was down 1 more lb to 68, so that is a good thing, but I would really like to know if I have lost any more!

I still am not eating the amount I am supposed to, but I must say - this whole thing is much easier than I had ever thought it would be. One of my biggest problems with diets in the past was if I ate something I wasn't "supposed" to, it would send me down a spiral of failure and I would ultimately end up going off my diet.

With the lap band, I feel like I don't have a choice - I'm going to lose weight, and I'm going to stay on track. There are no foods I'm not supposed to have. In general, I make very healthy choices, but yesterday I decided to have half a piece of apple pie, and I don't feel at all guilty about that. When I observe the eating habits of healthy people, it's not that they never have anything bad, but they certainly don't feel the need to consume everything in sight because of their guilt over a few pieces of pizza they had.

Anyway, I guess that guilt is gone for me. It's probably because I know that with my hunger in check, I can make the right choices. When I have something that it's healthy, it's because I'm having a treat, not falling off the wagon.

This is an interesting little journey....

:)
